Over the weekend at Termas de Rio Hondo the first of the two American rounds of the World Championship, increasingly orphaned by the Honda “Cannibal”.
It is an increasingly vacant throne, that of Marc Marquez. The Jerez 2020 accident triggered a ripple effect that – as is often said in these cases – episode after episode transforms the classic flapping of the butterfly’s wings into a real hurricane. If we look closely, the post-Marquez has already begun, well beyond the absence of the Honda champion from the roll of honor of the MotoGP in the last two years.
There’s no two without three? Easily yes, because the forfeit of Marquez in the upcoming GP of Argentina (and what is possible, if not probable) from the GP of the Americas the following weekend, deprive Marc himself of two fundamental chances to remedy at the very first glimpse of the season undertone – even worse – with the fifth place in Losail and the exit from the scene in Indonesia due to the flight in the warm up. In Termas de Rio Hondo and even more in Austin, Spanish has often and willingly dictated the law: three successes in six editions of the Argentine GP (where we return to racing after two consecutive and “pandemic” cancellations) between 2014 and 2019 in fact, even seven out of eight editions of the Texan stage of the World Championship.
We don’t want Marc, his entourage, Honda and his fans. The fact, however, is incontrovertible. The entire movement has just closed an important chapter in its history (the epic of Valentino Rossi, including a long declining coda) but in fact he is already preparing to turn another significant page on his journey, even if less striking and romantic, because it is completely dominated by the “Cannibal”. Marquez’s heirs are now established champions (of the World, in the case of Quartararo), the space to look back and check the advantage over the advancing future is no longer there: the future itself is already present. The feeling is that of being in front of a champion fighting for his place at the center of the stage, but who has to deal with a physique tested by battles that have left their mark. A pack leader who – inexorably – wounded in body and pride – loses his dominant role. We are going to extremes, of course. The inertia of the whole affair, however, goes all in this direction.
In Argentina, meanwhile, the World Cup started in Qatar faces the first of two stops on his tour in the Americas. At Termas de Rio Hondo Marquez i was imposed in the inaugural edition of the test (2014) and in the most recent one, two years ago. To complete the trio, the success of 2016. Among the pilots currently in business, only Maverick Vinales (2017) he has already won in Argentina in the MotoGP. In 2018 it was to establish itself Cal Crutchlownow a Yamaha test rider, and in 2015 a Valentino Rossi he had scored in these parts the fifth to last affirmation of his career. In addition to Quartararo and Bagnaiaalso the current leader of the general Enea Bastianini and the recent winner of Mandalika Miguel Oliveira they are on the hunt for their first win in Termas. For their part, four drivers currently engaged in the premier class managed to get on the top step of the podium, but obviously they did it in the smaller classes: Joan Mir and Marco Bezzecchi (Moto3), Franco Morbidelli and Johan Zarco in Moto2 (the latter even twice).
