Aleix Espargarò wins on Aprilia ahead of Martin and Rins-

from Paolo Lorenzi

At Termas de Rio Hondo, the historic success of the Noale brand, the Spaniard triumphs. Rins (Suzuki) is also on the podium. Fifth place for Bagnaia

It took Aprilia, the last Cinderella of MotoGP, seven years to conquer the first historic victory in the premier class. And the (temporary) record in the drivers’ championship. It took Aleix Espargaro 200 races to break the tab of the top step of the podium. They found each other, they believed in each other, they made the project grow with patience, to the detriment of the skepticism that surrounded them. We come from far away, said Aleix, moved. I believed in this project when no top rider wanted to come and race here. But if you work hard, dreams will eventually come true. It wasn’t easy, because he’s tough Jorge Martin kept Espargaro under pressure throughout the race. Two Spaniards to play an Italian motorcycle derby: Aprilia against Ducati. Aleix struggled to overtake me – said the Pramac driver – I tried to put pressure on him, hoping for his mistake, but he did well. Above all, and the aspect that impressed him the most, beat him to his ground. We were overtaken by the Aprilia on the straight, something is not right, speed has always been our strong point. Ducati also lost the championship lead.

Enea Bastianini restarts from Argentina with third place and a delay of 9 points from the top. Still few in a championship that is struggling to find a safe protagonist. Not Quartararo, eighth, not Bagnaia, fifth after yet another suffered weekend. Marc Marquez, who stayed home to treat his diplopia, still can’t be. Every legitimate dream, even that of Aleix Espargaro. I don’t want to wake up, I want to dream again. Next Sunday, in Austin, it will be tough, but if I think that three years ago I wanted to change everything, tired of the frustrations suffered. Then Massimo arrived and changed everything ….

Massimo Rivola, formerly of Ferrari
, wanted in the role of CEO by Roberto Colaninno, president of Piaggio, catapulted like a Martian between two wheels, after his experience in F1. Rivola has put the racing department in order, the right men in the right place. Like Romano Albesiano, the technical manager. Or like Paolo Bonora, team manager and electronic engineer. Where they lacked the means they put in passion and experience, the one inherited from a long history of successes (54 World Championships won on track and off-road by the motorcycles of Noale). They got the technical choices right, taking advantage of the regulatory concessions reserved for the younger MotoGP manufacturers, until they become competitive (Aprilia is the only one that can benefit from them). The turning point came in 2021, it was understood by the smiles found in the garage at the beginning of the season. The Silverstone podium gave morale to the group. The arrival of Maverick Viales has increased the ambitions. The former Yamaha finished seventh, a first sign, another indication that the Argentine company has a solid base.
