The preview of the Alfa Romeo team for the 2022 F1 world championship follows

Alfa Romeo is the team that has changed most of all in terms of its line up. After greeting Kimi Raikkonen (retired and now engaged in MXGP) and Antonio Giovinazzi (now third Ferrari driver and in Formula E with Dragon Penske), Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou arrived in Hinwil.

The C42, the 2022 single-seater of the Swiss team, took its first steps at Fiorano with a camouflage livery, the same one used in the first test session in Barcelona. To see the final livery, in fact, it was necessary to wait until the Sunday following the first three days of collective tests, when the team unveiled the color of the new car.

The C42 is one of those that suffered the most technical problems during the winter tests, especially in the first session in Barcelona where, in three days, Bottas and Zhou completed only 818 kilometers, ahead of only Haas (748). The Swiss team then recovered in the three days of Sakhir, where it was the fourth team by mileage with 1856 km, behind Mercedes, AlphaTauri and Ferrari.

Bottas, after Lewis Hamilton’s five-year experience as a teammate in Mercedes, has changed his life by becoming the reference point of the Swiss team, whose goal is to move up the rankings after the last few seasons, which have always seen him in the part low in the ranking. Vasseur places a lot of trust in Bottas who has the task of helping, with his experience, the development of the new C42.

Guanyu Zhou is the only rookie this season and arrives in Formula 1 with a cumbersome paying driver’s shadow behind him, in the wake of the local controversy for having taken over Giovinazzi’s seat. The first Chinese driver of the Circus has the arduous task of proving that he is worth a place in Formula 1 already in his first year on the track, considering the fact that he finished third behind Oscar Piastri and Robert Shwartzman in the last F2 championship but to have a starting place unlike the Australian, currently the third Alpine driver, and the Russian.

With the renewal of the technical regulations, Alfa Romeo’s objective can only be to move up the rankings after the last few seasons, always spent at the bottom of the group with few appearances in the points. The completely new line up, with Bottas’ experience (on which the team focuses a lot) and the novelty of Zhou, will be evaluated after a few races.
