“Ferrari and Bagnaia will play the World Cup until the end. Quartararo with Marquez? Difficult ”- OA Sport

Even if we are only in the first glimpse of the season as regards motorsportthis weekend it already announces itself as one of the most important of the entire vintage, given that we will live well five leagues in quick succession for the Super Race Weekend. From Formula One to the World Championship, passing among others, from Superbike. Endless emotions and spectacles that, especially thinking about MotoGP, will already begin to give us a lot of ideas thinking about the rest of the championship. Ideal moment to take stock of the situation at 360 ° with Guido MedaDeputy Director of Sky Sport and Chief Engineer.

Guido, a truly unmissable Sunday is promised for motor enthusiasts. From dawn until night five championships to be experienced. Will it start with an Australian F1 GP in Melbourne that could confirm the spectacle of the first two releases?

“It will be a very special day and we will start off strong with Formula One, before moving on to Superbike, Formula E, IndyCar and MotoGP. This 2022 of F1 is giving us endless emotions and it was not at all obvious to repeat what happened last year. Many feared that after the splendid duel between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, it was impossible to relive such a battle. I, on the other hand, was convinced that it would be like this, if not better. And do you know why? I was sure that Ferrari would be competitive at the starting line for the season. We are seeing a very high level in the clash between Rosse and Red Bull, but rest assured, Mercedes will also arrive. I don’t know how long it will take, but with a rider like the seven-time world champion leading the whole team, there is no doubt that they will enter the fight ”.

The Sunday of the Super Race Weekend will end with the highly anticipated MotoGP GP of the Americas, which will re-embrace Marc Marquez.

“His comeback in record time I think has three reasons. In the first place, the header caused by the bad fall of Mandalika caused the Spaniard a diplopia, fortunately, in a mild form and he was therefore able to recover quickly. The test of the past few days has been clarifying. It is useless to go around it, if you see double you don’t run, so it means that he is fine. Secondly, he knows perfectly well that Sunday will be raced on “his him” track, that is Austin, a circuit in which he could win in all conditions, given his schedule. Third, but not in order of importance, the general classification sees Aleix Espargarò in command with just 45 points in 3 races. The Honda standard bearer is at 11, so he has every chance to get back in the race right away and fight for the title ”.

We have only seen a handful of races so far, but can we already say that we will have a very open season?

“The feeling is that, and the show will benefit from it. There are many bikes that can win in every appointment, many riders of the highest level, and the times they show between qualifying and races prove it, and many of them have a lot to play for present and future. It will be fun and we’ll see how the championship develops. From the point of view of Sky, that is to say we who broadcast the event, if I was sure that F1 would have entertained us, I was of the same opinion also for the MotoGP. Even if there is no longer a point of reference like Valentino Rossi, in Italy the passion is there and you can feel it and by now a “hard core” has formed that follows the World Championship regardless. This is the greatest victory ”.

Who won a year ago was Fabio Quartararo. At the moment the French driver appears a bit on the high seas with his M1. How can such a situation be explained?

“I have the feeling that next year we will no longer see Yamaha with this configuration. After almost 20 years, after all the change of concept took place in 2004, this bike will probably be modified in a radical way. For many seasons they were right, with strings of titles won between Valentino, Jorge Lorenzo and, last but not least, “El Diablo”, but by now the MotoGP is going in another direction. No longer handling, but horses make the real difference. Everyone has done this step by now, now it’s up to them. After several years in which the pilots were clamoring for it, perhaps the right time has come. The market rumors? I am well aware that Honda has expressed interest in Quartararo, but I do not think that his arrival in the Repsol team is easy, also because I see it complicated that Marquez might be pleased with the possible arrival of a similar box mate at a time when he does not it is 100% from various points of view “.

If Fabio Quartararo started with a few too many hitches, Francesco Bagnaia’s start scared everyone a bit. Are the title chances intact?

“Surely“ Pecco ”didn’t expect that after 3 races he would only have 12 points. However, there is no lack of extenuating circumstances, but I want to start from a very clear point: Ducati did not get the project wrong. The GP22 is a good bike and it will prove it. After all, it is the continuation of the GP21 with a different engine and behavior. They just need time to bring the Desmosedici to the driving style of Bagnaia and Jack Miller. Then, let’s not forget that in Qatar the Borgo Panigale team perhaps wrapped itself up carrying too many new pieces to try, in Indonesia the rain messed up the plans, while in Argentina we enjoyed a good comeback in the race of “Pecco” which certainly gave back trust the Turin driver. Furthermore, he is experiencing a situation that he had never faced in the premier class, namely the pressure of having to win. I am sure that he will be able to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right position and if he will play it to the end “.

If Francesco Bagnaia can fight for the world crown, what should we expect from Enea Bastianini’s rest of the season?

“For him it will not be an easy path, certainly not for his value, but for that of his rivals. I am convinced that the factory teams will grow a lot and for the Romagna rider who, let’s remember, has a GP21 and a different technical treatment than the “factory” bikes, everything will get complicated. Having said that, one cannot but pay great compliments to Aeneas. He has grown up a lot, he is very strong and has a racing intelligence that is truly common to few riders. I hope he can still achieve great results because, obviously, his dream would be to join the factory team. He and Jorge Martin breathe on the neck of Jack Miller who, for his part, will try to defend his seat with his teeth “.

Always remaining in Italy, we can only congratulate Aprilia.

“No doubt. Sunday in Termas de Rio Hondo we witnessed a great victory for Aleix Espargarò. Before us was a real page of history. A rider who had never won on a bike who had always been waiting for his first triumph in the premier class. A success, among other things, came with full merit and without any hand from luck. It was impressive to see the Aprilia. On the straight he traveled like the Ducatis, in corners he was excellent, on the holes he sailed like on velvet. Congratulations to everyone in Noale and, if other victories arrive this season, I would not be surprised at all, even with a Maverick Vinales who finally seems to be on track ”.

What can we expect from other houses?

“KTM has already won a race with Miguel Oliveira and hit a second place with Brad Binder, it means that the bike is there and can compete on more circuits. Moving on to Suzuki, perhaps we all got a little too misled by the Lusail free practice. The GSX-RRs had incredible speed on the straight and we began to think that, once their biggest mole was solved, a season as absolute protagonists could open up for Joan Mir and Alex Rins. Instead, as often happens, Qatar is not 100% indicative and, as we have seen in the three outings, there is always something missing from the Japanese team to aim really high, but they will be able to make up for it ”.

If we say that Italy will be able to win the title in all three classes, are we traveling too fancy?

“Let’s say that rationally it is too optimistic, but not entirely. In MotoGP we know that “Pecco” Bagnaia will be able to be part of the match up to Valencia, so in Moto2 we are admiring a truly excellent Celestino Vietti. 70 points after three rounds, with two victories already in his pocket, do not arrive by chance and confirm that he has implemented an important growth. Now he is a structured rider, also thanks to the work of the VR46 Academy, and he is proving it. Moving on to Moto3, there is a loaded Dennis Foggia that paws. He knows he has great potential and will try to put it into practice to win the title ”.

The last point for another championship that raises the curtain at the weekend: the Superbike World Championship. What should we expect?

“Great show also in this case. It really looks like we’re going to have a 3-way fight with Toprak Razgatlioglu, Jonathan Rea and I want to include Alvaro Bautista as well. The reigning world champion starts with the desire to confirm himself, but he knows that in front of him he will have a Rea who is very ready to sell his skin dearly. This year he will have a bike at his disposal that will allow the Northern Irishman to unleash his maximum potential again and, as has been revealed by the tests, he seems really ready to return to the one of the previous six years. Also pay attention to Bautista’s return to Ducati. The feeling is particular with the Borgo Panigale bike and if he were able to return to the dominant one of the first part of the 2019 season … “.
