From South to North America in a week. MotoGP moves to the US to compete for the ninth time at the Circuit of the Americas. According to the Brembo technicians who work closely with all the riders of the MotoGP World Championship, the Texan track falls into the category of circuits on average demanding for the brakes. On a scale of 1 to 5 it deserved a difficulty index of 3.
The Austin track underwent extensive work in January, with the reinforcement of the soil and the laying of new asphalt in the first and third sectors. The bumps will therefore be less evident, with obvious benefits also in braking thanks to the greater grip.
From MotoGP to King of the Baggers – Also this year Brembo supplies customized braking systems to all 24 MotoGP riders. The supply also extends to the Moto2 and Moto3 teams: 100 percent of the riders of the two classes use Brembo calipers, 90 percent of the pumps, 80 percent of the pads and 50 percent of the steel discs.
From this year Brembo also supplies its systems to the motorcycles in the King of the Baggers category competing at MotoAmerica: to improve braking and ensure consistency of performance for the entire race, these cruisers are equipped with side cases, huge windshields and a minimum weight of 281 kg using GP4-RR calipers, PISTABASSA discs, Z04 pads and RMC BilletGP pumps.
Those who own a Harley-Davidson or an Indian, or even bagger from other manufacturers but do not use them on the track, have different needs. For all of them there is a range of Upgrade products called Custom which finds its fulcrum in the RCS pump, also in the RCS Corsa Corta variant, both equipped with Brembo’s patented system for adjusting the lever distance.
To improve comfort and braking performance, as well as reinforce the character of the bike, the stock calipers can be replaced with the .484 aluminum racing calipers machined from solid. The brake discs can also contribute to the general aesthetics, starting with the Black 11 ” which, having a housing made of different materials, are also less subject to thermo-mechanical stress.
Ten braking for 37 seconds – Each lap the MotoGP riders use the brakes 10 timesthe same number as the Portimao circuit but is almost a kilometer shorter. At the Circuit of the Americas the brakes are applied for 37 seconds per lap. Only Silverstone and Sepang with 38 seconds and Losail with 40 seconds have a higher value.
The track alternates high speeds, with two sections in which you exceed 300 km / h, with slow curves: 6 of these are tackled at less than 100 km / h. Also the times of use of the brakes present a considerable variance, with values ranging between 1.5 and 6.8 seconds. From the start to the checkered flag, each driver exerts a load on the lever of almost 10 quintals.
Of the 10 braking sections of the Circuit of the Americas, 3 are classified as demanding on the brakes, as many are of medium difficulty; while the remaining 4 have a slight impact on the braking systems. The hardest of all is the one at turn 12: the bikes reach 339 km / h and brake for 6.8 seconds to drop to 65 km / h. The 323 meters of braking mean a load on the lever of 5.6 kg and a deceleration of 1.5 g while the pressure of the Brembo HTC 64T brake fluid reaches 12.1 bar.
