pressure in the Yamaha RNF box

The MotoGP championship started all uphill for Andrea Dovizioso: 14th place in Losail, technical failure in Mandalika that forced him to retire, error in deactivating the holeshot device in Termas that made him lose so much time in the pits to get back on track and play a solo race. The Yamaha RNF team rider collected useful data also in view of the Austin Grand Prix where it will be necessary to collect a good result before the season is seriously compromised.

Pressure in the Yamaha RNF box

A few days of rest and we leave for the fourth appointment on the calendar. Andrea Dovizioso arrives at the Circuit of the Americas with a meager tally of 2 points, which are not good for personal and team morale, nor for the future, given that between now and the end of the spring he will have to decide his future. A certain pressure reigns in the pits: the contract between Razlan Razali’s team and Yamaha will have to be re-discussed and possibly renewed, the sponsors are pressing for results. And team manager Wilco Zeelenberg was clear: “So far we have experienced mixed emotions. In Argentina we expected something more, especially from Andrea in terms of results. He clearly made a mistake with the starting device, but this can happen to anyone, even the most experienced riders. We just have to make sure it doesn’t happen again“.

Uphill MotoGP season

On the Texan circuit Andrea Dovizioso has already competed with the Yamaha M1 in the 2021 MotoGP season. The new asphalt could also play in favor of the Iwata prototype which complains of a lack of rear grip as well as top speed on the straights. “Last year I felt pretty good, I’m looking forward to racing and trying to make a decent result. In Argentina I rode alone and played a bit with the bike. In Austin we will try something and see if it will help me feel better overall“.

Adapting to the bike is proving to be more difficult than expected. When he agreed to sign with the Iwata manufacturer, he would never have imagined that it would be so complicated to change riding style after eight MotoGP seasons in Ducati. “Fabio [Quartararo] makes the difference, he won the World Cup last year because the weaknesses are not a big problem in his case and at the same time he can take advantage of the positives. It really depends on the driving style. I still can’t take advantage of the positives and the negatives bother me a little too much. In Ducati I did the opposite. I think it depends a lot on team work and on the characteristics of a driver“.
