Ravnsborg says Senate will ‘vindicate’ him after House impeachment

South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg has been impeached, but he said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon he thought what’s next would only end in his favor.

“The House of Representatives voted, and I respect the process, but I look forward to the Senate trial, where I believe I will be vindicated,” the statement released by Ravnsborg read.

The South Dakota House of Representatives for the first time in statehood adopted articles of impeachment for a constitutional office holder Tuesday, condemning the 45-year-old Republican for his conduct related to a 2020 crash that killed a pedestrian.

The 36-31 vote defies a recommendation issued March 28 by a special investigative committee of lawmakers, who deemed Ravnsborg’s actions did not amount to impeachable offenses, and triggers a trial in the Senate that will decide whether Ravnsborg will be forced out of office.
