It was the end of February when Tokina announced its latest lens: it was the SZ 8mm F2.8 E FISH-EYE, a solution dedicated to mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensor from Sony and Fujifilm. Now, several weeks later, another novelty arrives that always concerns the same type of camera bodies but looking in another direction as regards the technical specifications. Here’s the new one Tokina SZ 33mm F1.2.
What the Japanese company has proposed is to create a lens with an interesting image quality, the ability to create bokeh of a good standard but also to have an affordable price. This will allow it to compete against proprietary models such as the Fujifilm XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR, albeit with some sacrifices.
The specifications of the new Tokina SZ 33mm F1.2
According to the manufacturer, the new lens uses a standard viewing angle (33mm on APS-C, 50mm equivalent) combined with a particularly fast aperture. The idea is that this model will appeal to content creators both when it comes to images and videos with various genres ranging from landscapes to portraits to travel or photos in difficult lighting conditions.
The new Tokina SZ 33mm F1.2 it uses an optical design that includes 9 elements divided into 7 groups that use a multilayer coating to improve the overall quality and reduce artifacts. The maximum aperture of the diaphragm (consisting of 11 blades) is equal to f / 1.2 while the minimum is equal to f / 16.
The minimum focusing distance is 50 cm and there is no autofocus system (which makes it lighter, less complex, less expensive but also less versatile than solutions like the Fujifilm 33mm f / 1.4). The adjustment is made with a focus ring with silent movement (de-clicked) useful in case of video also thanks to a reduction of focus breathing.
The size of the target Tokina SZ 33mm F1.2 are equal to 71 x 87.5 mm with a weight that settles on 605 grams. According to reports, the construction is made of metal allowing to improve the feeling of quality by using it. Availability should be immediate while the price sales should be equal to 399 dollars (In the USA).
