A real blue flash illuminated the first stage of the tour of Sicily with arrival in Bagheria. Matteo Malucelli got the better of a group sprint beating Matteo Moschetti (Trek Segafredo) and Filippo Fiorelli (Bardiani CSF Faizanè). The arrival in the sprint was announced and did not disappoint; the rider from Romagna, counted among the favorites, scored the second success of the season after the one at the Tour Of Antalya. So much emotion for him that he has been racing for weeks due to the blockade of the Gazprom RUsvelo, for the occasion he is racing with the colors of the Italian national team together with many teammates under the direction of coach Daniele Bennati.

THE RACE

The tour of Sicily began with the Milazzo Bagheria, the longest stage in this edition; 199 km mostly flat and with a finish suitable for fast wheels. A single gpm is expected in the Tindari area, but just 25 km from the start. Between breathtaking landscapes and a view of the sea, the group has fought since the first kilometers, imposing a very high pace and not allowing, in fact, no one to take off.

After about 15 km 7 runners finally manage to escape from the platoon: Micjael Belleri (Biesse Carrera), Nelson Andres Soto (Colombia Tierra de Atletas), Gabriele Petrelli (Cycling Team Friuli), Alejandro Ropero (Eolo Kometa), Guido Draghi (Mg. K Vis), Stefano Gandin (Team Corratec), Francesco Zandri (Work Service Vitalcare). The 7, giving themselves regular changes, get to accumulate a maximum advantage of about 4 minutes. The sprinter teams alternate at the head of the group: Matteo Moschetti’s Trek Segafredo, Matteo Malucelli’s Italian National Team, Filippo Fiorelli’s Bardiani CSF Faizanè and Boy Van Poppel’s Intermarchè Wanty Gobert.

The group of fugitives literally bursts out near the flying finish line of Termini Imerese located 25 km from the finish, after shots and counter-shots it is Nelson Andre Soto who pays the consequences by losing the wheels of his fellow fugitives. In front there are 6 who give each other regular changes, but the group led by the Italian national team and the Bardiani CSF Faizanè proceeds at very high speed. The last to resist the advance of the platoon are Michael Belleri and Gabriele Petrelli who are caught 5 km from the finish. A few kilometers earlier Alessandro Monaco (Giotti Vittoria) had attempted a solitary attack but never managed to reach the head of the race.

The Trek Segafredo enters the last kilometer pulling the group for the captain of the day Matteo Moschetti, it is the Lombard who launches the sprint anticipating the opponents. Matteo Malucelli, who started much further back, however, managed to catch up with his compatriot by winning the first stage of the Giro di Sicilia. Second position for Matteo Moschetti, to complete the podium there is Filippo Fiorelli the home favorite. Matteo Malucelli goes to wear the leader’s jersey of the general.

Tomorrow we start again with the second stage, Palma di Montechiaro-Caltanisetta 152 km long. A very moving fraction that can leave room for interesting surprises and some upheavals in the general classification
